In this show, Jesse Gallagher officially starts the NotesIn9 Hackathon with a great introduction on “custom renderers” in XPages. While this seems to be a really scary topic, Jesse explains it in a way that even I can grasp it.

If I store some json in a document which I later want to render in a page inside a repeat control for example. Would that be a good use for a custom renderer?

  I guess it depends on how you mean “render in a page” – would the idea be to render the JSON like some browsers do in a collapsible tree of data, or would it be more to translate the JSON data into document-like data? If the latter, I think it’d be more the job of the code loading the JSON (say, a controller method that parses the JSON into Lists and Maps).
